Getting Started Guide for Saints of Virtue
This walkthrough is given to help you get into the game and get started on the right track. You may want to print this out and go step-by-step through it. Success in the game takes exploration and experimentation. Sometimes though you may be stuck. If you are, look at our hints section on our website at http://www.saintsofvirtue.com/hints.html and if you don't find an answer, send us an e-mail at help@saintsofvirtue.com.
1) You start in the Amphitheater. You can jump off the stage by just walking off. Use your arrow keys to go forward/backward and turn left or right. Or use a joystick or mouse to move. You will have to use the keyboard to do things such as jump (X key or HOME key) and open a door (SPACEBAR).
2) Once you are off the stage, turn to your right and look near the floor. You will notice an object. Go to that object and run into it. As you get near, you will pick up the object. It is a scroll. Hit 'S' to look at the scrolls in your inventory. Use the TAB key or mouse to select the EYE to the left of the scroll. Read the scroll. Hit OK to put it away. You will use the scroll later.
3) Try jumping on the stage by hitting the PGUP key. Get used to jumping because you will need to do this at various points in the game.
4) As you look around, you see 5 exits. If you notice on top of these exits are little lights. If the light is green, it means you can "go" into it, if it is red it means you cannot. You can actually go into all the areas a little bit...if you want to experiment. Three of the lights are green. You can explore either of these three areas -- but actually if you go into the Pits of Despair, you will be stopped by a pit. So the other two open areas are the Caves of Loneliness and the Mall of Distraction. Let's first go into the Caves of Loneliness. This one is the #2 exit (if #1 is on left, #2 is next...to #5) that is just to the left of the center one.
5) As you enter in the Caves of Loneliness, you will run by an area where the wall seems discolored. There will even be a clue with a text message that comes up. Go ahead and push this wall by hitting the SPACEBAR. Walla! The wall moves and you can now enter a secret passageway. Enter in and get the SHIELD power-up.
6) Continue down the passageway. You will enter a large cave. As you enter, you will notice an enemy -- Vanity -- will be in front of you. You must use the CTRL key to fire at it. Line up the crosshairs with the enemy when you fire. If you hit the enemy, you should see a flash and it may shake and you hear it make a sound of being hit. Since Vanity can be quite a foe, you must continue shooting it until it is gone.
7) Vanity is a rather straightforward enemy. It moves towards you and sometimes left and right and is pretty slow. If you are accurate with your shots, you should be able to vanquish Vanity fairly easily.
In terms of strategy when fighting enemies, there are several. You can move around some and dodge back and forth behind walls so the enemies cannot hit you. Or you can move closer and move around the enemy, although the enemies tend to track you well. Or you can sometimes just avoid the enemy and go around it. Some enemies will follow, while others do not care enough to try to defeat you.
Whatever you do, learn what works and what doesn't. One thing that is important is accuracy. You can check it with F9 -- which will show you your current statistics for the level. If you accuracy is below 40%, it should be improved. You may find that you run out of ammo. A good accuracy is around 50%. A very good accuracy is around 65%.
8) In this large cave, you will find another Vanity enemy you must deal with. Once these enemies are dealt with, or before if you can, you will discover several powerups in this area. Collect as many as you can to replenish your resources. It is important to look for and discover any powerups. The most likely powerup that players struggle with is ammo -- so always collect as much as you can!
9) As you go around this large cave, you will find two other exits. One to the northwest (which is all relative) or if when you entered the cave that entrance is 3 o'clock on a clock dial and the northwest exit would be around 11 o'clock. Another exit is to the southwest and would be around 7 o'clock. You can explore either of these areas.
10) For this walkthrough, go to the southwest exit. After you enter the hallway a bit, you will be faced with an enemy blocking the passageway. Dispense of it quickly. You may notice how the closer you are, the more quickly you can fire and defeat the enemy quicker.
11) Then you will enter the canyons. This is a series of up and down areas. You will face several more enemies here. They can be very annoying and you may be able to get by some of these by just avoiding them. One skill you may have to use to defeat them is to aim your sword with the look up and down keys (which is the Home/'7' keypad and End/'1' Keypad). You can always restore your looking up and down by hitting the INS key to go back to "level".
12) After the canyon, you will find some powerups and then enter into a new cave. You have two choices go left and right. Choose left.
13) You enter a room with a pendulum swinging. No enemies here. What is the pendulum for? What could you do with the pendulum? Some things in the game have a purpose, while other things are just "food for thought". The pendulum just represents how lonely life can be...if we just focus on time. Just for fun, jump into the pit. That didn't hurt much...did it. After you fell, you are placed back in a similar area. One thing great about this game is you can try anything. Sometimes you will be penalized by losing health, but you won't automatically lose your life if you make a mistake. So feel free to experiment...you never know what you will find.
14) You will enter the Loneliness Maze. Use your Map (access it by hitting the TAB key) to see where you are. You can turn it off by hitting the TAB key again. If you can't see something on your map, then that means you have not been there.
15) You will go around this maze trying to get to the center. You will face several more Vanity enemies too.
16) Once you get to the center of the maze, you will go around an area that has a pit and a rock structure in the middle. If you walk around the outside of this -- be careful, the ledge is slim -- you can see that there is a door in the rock structure. You can try to jump to the door.
17) It is very hard to make it to the door...that is ok...you have now entered the Plain of Loneliness. The place looks huge! Nothing much around. Start exploring...there must be an exit.
18) If as you are exploring, you find some power-ups, before you grab them, notice their pattern. Hmmm, its kind of interesting isn't it? Like an arrow perhaps? Which way are they pointing? Perhaps it is best to follow them!
19) If you follow the arrows OR if as you happen to explore around get very lucky to stumble across the exit. Just jump on in. And you will be back to where you started. Except notice the bridge.
20) Here's the door. You can hit SPACEBAR to access it. Now you need to choose the right scroll. If you only have one scroll, then try that one. It worked! Cool!!! (We wanted it to be real easy for this first one). The door opens!
21) Ok, you found a button. Go ahead, click on it. Press the spacebar when you are facing it. You should see it being pressed and hear it too. Wonder what that did? (Hint: The level is called Apathy. Bigger hint: you will have to be patient and eventually what it did will be revealed...)
22) Now you can go back and explore the other area in the Cave of Loneliness that you missed.
Instead of going step by step through everything else in the Loneliness area...here a few general clues:> When you explore the really dark area, you can get through it by following the beams of light. Also, you can shoot your sword to light up the area to give you a glimpse.
> There is a scroll in the really dark area that you need to find. It is down a really dark pathway that is near the end of the beams of light.
> Be sure to find and pickup a rock in the really dark area...it will be essential later on.
